Celebrating Raksha Bandhan

Celebrating Raksha Bandhan

What is Raksha Bandhan? The sacred knot of unconditional love

Every year on the full moon day of the Hindu Month of Shravan, millions of families around the world come together to celebrate Raksha Bandhan (fondly known as Rakhi).

Derived from Sanskrit:

Raksha - Protection

Bandhan - Sacred Bond or Tie

At its heart, Rakhi is a celebration of the enduring bond between siblings. The ritual consists of an aarti (prayer of well-being), applying a sacred tilak and rice to her brothers forehead and tying an ornamental thread - the Rakhi - around his wrist.

This thread represents a sisters prayer for her bothers long life, happiness and prosperity. In return, the brother offers a heartfelt promise to always support and cherish his sister, followed by an exchange of traditional sweets and gifts.

In the current climate and fast-paced world, Rakhi is more than just a ritual - it's a cherished moment to pause, reconnect with siblings, reminisce about the childhood and celebrate the people who have been there throughout.
